Proofreading Service

Proofreading is an essential part of the writing and editing process. Not only does it provide a fresh perspective on how the writing flows, but even the most knowledgeable authors can be blind to their own spelling and grammar mistakes after much repetitive reading. A good proofreader strives to not only zero in on mistakes, but also to approach the piece as a first-time reader, pointing out sentences that may be constructed in a confusing way.

Documents provided in Microsoft Word format will be proofread using Word's powerful Track Changes feature, which allows the author to see every suggestion made by the proofreader, and accept or reject each change with a click of the mouse.

Portland Proof uses The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition as our official guideline for punctuation, grammar and word usage.

Portland Proof provides not just a proofreading service, but also a "second pair of eyes" service - a second proofreader to double-check the work of the primary proofreader.

Each author has different needs. Some authors need help improving the clarity of their writing, or in making stylistic improvements; others simply need a pair of eyes to spot spelling, punctuation or grammar mistakes. Whatever your needs, when you contact Portland Proof, you will receive individual attention and customized service to meet your proofreading needs.

Satisfied Clients

"As a writer and author, I have long valued the services of a good proofreader. It is enough to research and compose without worrying about crossing every t and dotting every i!

"In my latest project, I found the services of Portland Proof to be invaluable in creating a quality work that is both readable and accurate. Laura gets an A+ for her attention to detail and ability to polish a sentence or a paragraph."
~Bob Briggs, author of Around Hallowell

"As the administrator and moderator of a popular creative writing website (Fifteen Minutes of Fiction) I knew that when the time came to publish our first anthology of stories and poems, proofreading would be a daunting task. Many styles of writing, combined with many ability levels (both adults and children had writings included in the anthology) required a sharp eye and a keen understanding of grammar, punctuation and style. Laura was more than equal to the task, and helped us produce what is undoubtedly one of the finest anthologies of amateur creative writing in print. The project would have been impossible without her."
~Douglas Twitchell, FMOF Administrator
